Right now it feels like the proofing/rising room in a bakery in here, which is a lot like what it feels like outside. It's close, clammy and windless. Breathing is an effort. The towels from this morning's shower are still wet. And no surprise, we have a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH issued thru 9 p.m. Yes, it's gonna rain.
There's a myriad of ways to tell if rain's coming. When it's been dry, leaves on trees turn themselves to accept it. Birds "call for rain" when the pressure drops. Those of us with wavy, curly or fine hair will know by its annoying impossibility to manage. People will wash their cars. Or hang out laundry. And most of us with arthritis or of a certain age will know by how our joints feel.
But I find the surest way to know is to go outside and look. If there's no blue, it may rain. If there's blue, it may not. This has aided me abundantly in not watching the Weather Channel. Who knew the weather was right there, for your own observation?

Exactly! My husband will sit in front of the computer and watch the storms come on Doppler. I tell him to just look out the window.
We had some wild wind and lightning last night and again this afternoon...lots of rain...lots.
I dunno, Austan. You let people predict their own weather and pretty soon they want to make their own coffee, elect their own representatives --civilization suffers!
If I tell that I can give an idea of the weather, I am looked at as the old women, which I am getting to be.
I wish it was going to rain here. The weather boffins say it is, but I think they are fibbing. It is grey, but the cloud is too high and too thin. Sigh.
And yes, looking outside is MUCH more reliable...
Arleen- when did everyone stop being normal? Look outside. Go outside. Jeez.
Lawless- 20 minutes after the Severe Weather Alert passed, we had a huge and wondrful storm. The kind that makes lots of noise and rains like hell. I measure my nerves as fine since that storm lulled me to sleep.
Geo.- you're right, it's people like me what causes unrest!
Munir- why is wisdom and experience and education so denigrated these days?
EC- oh I wish you rain. There is something cathartic about a huge noisy but harmless storm. It's a tantrum, a fit, in Nature. And things just feel better afterward.
