I'm lately put in mind of our religious upbringing. Lots of reasons for that. But since most of my time served in church was spent in the maroon robes and white surplices, church meant hymns. And hymns are sacred songs that people hold close to their hearts. Hymns inspire, hold sentiment, uplift, resolve. What I learned by rote in church choir didn't really do that for me. But here are some songs that did and still do.

I didn't mind listening to the hymns in church but I didn't like singing. I think I should have been a Quaker. Just get to the point and give me the message.
In my faith we do not sing in our prayer houses. Music touches our soul and I find that music in itself can be like a prayer. I know what hymns are and sometimes they can be very encouraging.

Lawless- I liked singing, but the music was often repetitive. And the music was the best part of the service.

We were not church goers - my father was until shortly before his death a lapsed Jew and my mother belonged to the Church of Englad but did not attend services.
So hymns are quite alien to me. In later life I have heard some and quite like the words/the music but they don't carry the weight of memories for me.
The music I quite like.
I love the songs we sing in church! and i love when my son comes home and plays them on the paino.
I sing these songs in my mind when i get stressed.
