It Is Known, But Nothing Changes

There seems a disconnection somewhere. Perhaps the planet's synapses aren't firing right these days, but I'm noticing a lot of more of the same crapola keeps happening yet is posted as if it was a new development.

Like this:

Now, it wasn't that long ago that Walmart closed a whole store in Canada, and then one of their Tire & Lube garages in Canada, because the workers had organized.

And before that, Waldemort (as I like to call them) was found guilty of numerous violations perpetrated on their employees- which still goes on

Years before that, Waldemort took out life insurance policies on their employees. Doesn't anyone remember that scandal?

So many people know that Waldemort has wiped out Mom & Pop stores in towns and driven down the GNP that I can't believe this is still a surprise. Their model of employment has set the new, lower standard of living for all workers, as others copycat the bottom-dwelling model. That they discriminate and encourage their US employees to go on Medicaid, well, I thought everyone knew all that.

And yes, most people still go shopping there regularly, supporting Waldemort on a weekly basis, ignoring how this one very powerful chain store has brought us all down. Doesn't everyone know?

It's getting frustratingly hard to avoid American owned stores here in Ontario....there aren't that many places left to shop for the standard everyday things of life.

I'm not a reformer by any means but have never set foot in a Wallmart. Never intend to. I watched them suck the souls out of nearby towns, not just with bad labor policies, but by crushing independent community businesses as well.

You've been here. Wallyworld was the only place to shop then and it's even worse now. I worked there for a couple of years and deliberately quit in such a way that they would never hire me back. Everyone is hired in as part-time (20 yrs ago that was under 30 hrs/wk). If you worked full-time hours for 4 weeks straight, they had to give you full-time benefits. They'd work you 40+ hours for those three weeks and the the fourth week, you were lucky to get 10. I fell off a ladder (granted it wasn't a tall ladder and I didn't fall far or badly), but they didn't do crap about it except make me climb it again to straighten some boxes that were almost perfectly straight to begin with. I despise that place and can't wait to get somewhere with more options!

AND... the Wal-Martians having their family reunions in the aisles...

I just had to get photos developed at Wallymart this morning, as it's the only place in town I can get them done. I try to avoid them otherwise. Ours isn't that big but I think they are intending to move downtown so that they can then get a permit to build a big ass Walmart in the north end up here. That is going to royally suck.

I hear ya. I'm not a fan of Wal-Mart either, and now one of Canada's great department store chains is disappearing in our community. Target bought out Zeller's and is now closing down most Zeller's in small communities like ours. Soon I won't have anywhere else to shop but Wal-mart. Sigh.

Hi Laura,
And good old Walmart bought out ASDA in Britain. Me thinks, with Walmart's policies and exploitation of its workers, that this awful government in Britain, would welcome Walmart to take over all shops here, big and small.
