Holidays Back Home

Every year, when we all lived in NYC and my parents were alive, we'd take a drive to go look at the lights. The old neighborhood (Bay Ridge) did its part in making Con Edison rich, but nobody on Earth does it like the next door neighborhoods of Bensonhurst and Dyker Heights. The Griswold's is just another house on those streets:

And in Manhattan,

The Lord and Taylor windows are a treat
These are the things I miss about NY at Christmas. The over-the-top getting carried away of it all. The insanity. The hilarity. The palpable excitement.

New England holidays are sweet, tasteful, mostly conservative. All is calm and partially bright. But I do miss the ridiculous displays, the silliness, the rivalries, the all-out "HEY! IT'S CHRISTMAS!!" of the holidays back home.

Hey Laura,

What a visual Christmas treat. Christmas in New York is certainly magical. The most magical place I've ever seen in Canada would have to be Quebec City. You might want to check this out as you reflect upon your past Christmas times.

It's almost 100 degrees here. Fortunately kids don't seem to have worked out that if Santa was real and wore all that gear here he'd be dead in an hour from dehydration. I miss the snow :( Great to be reading you again :)

Each year on Christmas Eve my father would drive us chillun around to look at the lights. I now think it served a number of purposes including getting us out of the house so mama could wrap things and trying (vainly) to tire us out, but it was a wonderful tradition. And in those days trees were placed in the front windows of houses and the curtains left open so we could all enjoy them. Which we did.

Gary,
Thank you. That's charming. I do love the lights of Christmastime. From the magical to the ridiculous, it's all good by me. :)

EC- Wasn't it a treat to see the lights? I remember those rides with such affection. All the effort people put into their displays! And sometimes just a shining tree in the window... beauty. x

Thank you for sharing. Beautiful light displays, specially the first one. Lord and Taylor and Macy are very pretty too.
Best wishes to you and your loved ones for the Holidays.
