Today was International Women's Day. Not that there was any notice. I didn't know about it until earlier this week and promptly ignored it. Actually, the thought that 50% of the population has to have a Day for noticing them makes me want to go punch someone in the nose. But then what Virginia allowed to happen today makes me want to punch all of them in the nose. Are you frigging kidding me?

And I've been uncommonly mellow lately. I can imagine how my old pals in NY are taking this. The bars will be full tonight in my old neighborhood. Cops may be called.
This is the same issue that Jon Stewart did this excellent bit about:

How many slaps in the face will it take before this right wing "Christian" crap is stomped out? I hope Jesus does come back, and kicks all their asses. I had 3 women missionaries at my door today. I had to push the woman's hand (trying to foist their pamphlet into my house) out the door and shut it in her face. These people don't even realize how insanely programmed they are. I'm so ashamed of my country and where it's gone in the last dozen years I don't know what to do. But it's my country too, and I'm not giving it up to these assholes.
So much for Women's Day.

So when is mens day? I think it's important that they have an equal opportunity to ignore such a ridiculous thing.
Lawless- that's the point. Why do we have to have a Day to be acknowledged as human beings? Men just are, but we're something less than? It's insulting in this day and age. Oh right, I forgot we're second class citizens. We couldn't even vote until 99 years ago. I'm sick of meaningless patriarchal bullshit.
That is really, really scary stuff. And we have the hide to pretend to be morally superior to other cultures who are a little more upfront with their prejudices. Aaargh. Sorry, the end result is much the same. Sucksville City.
EC- I feel like I went to sleep in the mid-70s, and woke up to a world going backwards instead of forward.

I just try to ignore the ridiculous and having a day to "celebrate" half the population falls under that label. I bet even Hallmark ignored this
It says something when we all ignore this so-called "womens day". B asked me, in jest, so when's mens day... of course I said, "Every god damn day!"
This attack on women by the right-wing "Christians" makes me sick to my stomach. It really does.
Allyson- Everyone should read that article. And DO something.
Arleen- I'm equally as sure that Hallmark won't be making "So you had an invasive violating government-demanded probing today" card.
International Women's Day goes back to around 1910 when it started in Europe (was it in Denmark maybe?)as International Working Women's Day. It started here in the US by female Socialists, and then took hold in Europe as a means of advocating for women's rights - you know, voting, tht sort of thing.
