I have to say that Facebook's a wild ride to just join now. So many people are on there, and so many threads run through everyone's lives. Everyone is in there! People I haven't spoken to, lost touch with, old co-workers and pals from every era of my life-they're in there! It was a whole day of boiling decades of things down to a few lines in a little box. My eyes are shot, my head is full and I'm drained.
But really? Facebook is like a necessary evil these days. And to be honest, it can be fun. I sit corrected.

Austan, I am following your foray into FB with great interest. My friend, Willie, has urged me to join for years. To my knowledge he is the only member who has personally met and bummed rides off all his 10,000 FB friends. I tell him such a social gallimaufry would topple the who of me. I think you, like Willie, are better-anchored internally than I and it will be good for you. My wife's on FB and does fine --she is my stunt-double-- but tells me little. Keep transmitting.
I think I'll hold off on the facebook/twitter route. I spend way too much time on the computer as it is. Still...it was a useful tool for finding your brother.
I'm with Delores on all counts. And, I don't think I want to be found. I will (shameful hypocrite that I am) be interested in your journey though.
A lady I work with calls it Face-Stalking. In a way it is. I have been on it for a few years but only check it weekly. To tell you the truth, I really don't care if someone I know is getting a haircut or some other such trivia people tend to post.
I'm sorry.... I had to laugh :) You've gone off on FB a lot of times I've suggested it. It sucks you in. I agree that it's a HUGE time waster, but it's invaluable when you want to keep in touch with family and friends so far away! And, sometimes, those little trivial things in their lives are great to know. I've been able to bond with more cousins I've never met over those trivial things. Helps to get to know them better :D
Geo.- It's weird, and without the necessity of trying to find family I wouldn't have done it. You can't look in the phone book anymore because everyone's on cell. So it was the only option. But I can't say I'm unhappy with it; I'm somewhat tickled to find out what happened to people. Of course I have the advantage of not having my maiden name so many people will never pop up unless I look for them. But you don't have to interact with anyone you don't want to, and there are a lot of privacy settings now. And there was no requirement to allow access to your PC & email addies as there was the first time I tried it. You have a lot more control. As for the info mining...well, at this point google and amazon have lots on me so what the hell.
Lawless- I won't be tweeting. FB is quite enough. I could see getting sucked into spending way too much time farting around with all these things. I have a life.
EC- I understand entirely. I'll post on my adventures as they happen. Right now I'm excited to find a friend's son that I've worried about since I've known him, and very happy to have found a couple of friends I lost touch with years ago.
Arleen- There are those who feel the need to tell everyone about every single thing they do. I plan to avoid those pages/people. :D
Personally, I've arrived at a place where I find FB to be -almost- as enjoyable as it is frustrating. But it is impermanent - it doesn't stick around the way a blog post does. I can go back and re-read my blog. FB, not so much. But for staying in touch, seeing what friends are thinking, quick “conversations” and the like, it’s good. It’s really just another tool, a lot depends on how you use it. Welcome to the madness
Nievely- it's a tool, I figure. And the settings are adequate to allow even the paranoid to stand it. I can see how one could get sucked into all sorts of things on it but most of those things don't interest me, thankfully. lol
Stevil- it's really useful to have chats- I had 5 going at once last night (you were one!) and it can get annoying like most things in life these days. But yes, it's useful. Thank you for the welcome, the madness is inevitable.
